Newby Foundries Group – The 3D Measurement Company helps deliver on rapid prototyping, Quality and Inspection
Established c.1890 and developed by five generations of the Newby family, Newby Foundries Group consists of various market leading foundries who produce and supply quality lost wax and sand castings in ferrous and non-ferrous materials within the UK and worldwide.

The 3D Measurement Company (T3DMC) have been working with Newby Foundries Group on projects relating to rapid prototyping from development to production and how the use of 3D data collection using the latest 3D optical scanner can be used as a fundamental part of the process.
Newby Foundries Group had a requirement to look for the best solution available to help improve their rapid prototyping workflow and provide quality and inspection reports for customers as well as making sure the design was being successfully delivered from CAD to manufactured part.
“After extensively looking at a range of 3D scanning products from various vendors we decided that the AXE 3D scanner provided by T3DMC was the best solution for our requirements. Key factors for our decision was based on ease of use, quality of data, flexibility of applications as we need to scan parts ranging from 0.1m to over 3m in size. The AXE 3D scanner was the only system available that had built in photogrammetry which meant that we could be sure that the data we collected was accurate when dealing with larger applications over 1m in size. Its portability means that we can use this equipment at multiple locations and even take the system to our customers locations should the need arise which also saves unnecessary delays on the decision process for time critical projects.
The need for an industry recognised standard of trusted inspection software tools was provided by T3DMC by way of GOM Inspect Professional – this allowed us to take inspection reporting to the next level as we design bespoke templates to meet our customer specific inspection criteria and then with the powerful automated report feature it allows us to generate a full inspection report within minutes of uploading the scan data. Quality control and inspection documentation is then automatically created, this time saving operation saves our engineers hours on their daily work schedules and provides a platform to add any additional inspections that make have to be done at a later date even if the part is no longer available as we still have the original 3D scan data.
The team at T3DMC provided us support and training on all the products to make sure we were up and running within 24 hours of receiving the system and their support team has always dealt with any questions we have had since putting the system in place in March.”

The software programmes that the T3DMC technical team support are the industry standard, but the real advantage that they bring to the process is understanding the 3D optical scanning process, the interpretation of the data, the management of the output data and its comparison to the original CAD, in addition to the creation of detailed reports explaining the variations and the recommendations for optimisation to suit the component and its production process. The latest generation of 3D scanners are used for many applications which have much greater complexity and require better manufacturing processes beyond the ability to measure using traditional tactile systems.
